I was about 10 years young the first time I played the board game called monopoly. I loved the idea of owning a property and the other players paid me when they landed on my property. I became excited and my goal was to dominate the entire board. I didn't realize it back then, but an entrepreneur was born.
At the age of 19 I owned my first real estate property. At the age of 20 I became a police officer in the money market capital of the world, New York City. At the age of 29 I was introduced to network marketing. I was hooked.
Network marketing is a challenging profession. Jim Rohn described network marketing as "herding cats." The real challenge is becoming the leader you were created to be. As a network marketer, I was taught how to build a business the wrong way. And you were probably taught the wrong things too.
Think about it for a minute. When I was a full-time real estate investor I purchased real estate by non-traditional methods. Meaning I had to be creative. To be creative you have to develop a relationship with the person that was going to invest their money in you. That person will invest in you if they liked and trusted you. Of course your credit played a role, but if you had great credit but were not credible, you didn't get the money.
My job as a police officer was tough. But I made my job "easier" by gaining the trust of the citizens I swore to protect. The community liked and trusted me. In fact, everyone in the community knew me by my first name. I developed a positive relationship with everyone. Even the bad guys.
Network marketing is no different. You must gain the trust and be liked by the people you do business. It's that simple. Somehow that message was lost. As a result, frustration sets in and many people quit and give the network marketing profession a black eye. I don't blame the disgruntled former network marketers. I place blame in the industry and many of the "gurus" that tell you to recruit, recruit, recruit. Recruit your friends, family and everyone you come in contact (the 3-foot rule).
I learned that your lack of success is not your fault. The system set you up for failure from the very beginning. After six companies and years of trial and error, I came across Michael Dlouhy. As the saying goes, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." I downloaded the "Success In 10 Steps" e-book, watched 3 videos and then had a conversation with the author, Michael Dlouhy. It was that simple.
